The joint education and upbringing of students, since the establishment of Ternopil Medical Institute in 1957, allowed training of high-skilled medical specialists, who preserve the university values and traditions as well as cultural and historical heritage of Ukrainian people.

Interesting issues on the forms and methods of educational work were discussed at the meetings already in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The involvement of students and teachers in amateur art activities were important for their all-round and harmonious development. Already in 1959, the first review-competition of amateur art among courses took part in the Institute. In the 1960s an art studio was initiated.

Student poets and artists managed a newspaper that was edited by Assistant Professor A.V. Kovalchuk, Assistant Professor V.S. Lisovyi, Associate Professor I.O. Sytnyk, Associate Professor V.V. Faifura, and Associate Professor M.M. Zakaliuzhnyi.

In the 1960s, Club of Humour (Club of the Cheerful and Sharp-witted) contests was met with great interest of medical students, and in the 1970s, teachers and students enjoyed a revue theatre.

As a rule the participants of Institute's amateur art groups, as well as of individual genres, won prizes at regional reviews over and over again.

Ohiy headed the Ternopil Regional Organization of the Znannia (Knowledge) Society. The Institute staff participated in the promotion of healthy lifestyles. The tours of the institute teachers’ teams to the districts of the region for question-answers events were popular. The students followed the teachers’ example.

The Horizon International Friendship Club had operated since 1973; for many years it won regional competitions among educational institutions.

Much attention was paid to military and patriotic education. Student meetings with veterans of World War II were held at the Museum of History of Medical Institute.
